José Pereyra Lucena

Bio

José Pereyra Lucena was born on May 19, 1984 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Self-taught photographer who has attended Fine Art Photography specialization workshops with Diego Ortiz Mugica.
"Revelation photographer" at the BA Photo 2010 fair. Since then his photos have been transferred to numerous artistic works and editorial publications. The essence of his work took the form of a book with "AL Este" (Ed. Catapulta), capturing the spirit of the Uruguayan coast, in 2018. He has worked for the book "TEGUI", by Germán Martitegui and is the author of the photographs of the book PROYECTO TIERRAS (2023) together with the same chef.
He gave life and visibility to the Pueblo Abierto project, (2015 and 2016), a traveling gastronomy festival that rescues the value of the tradition of towns in Argentina. His works were exhibited at the Palatina gallery in 2010 and 2011 and together with Marcela Costa Peuser in 2022.
His style is that of a hunter of unique moments, whose inspiration resides especially in stripped-down landscapes, night skies and social dynamics, achieving climatic and emotional stories.
His work has taken him around the world and recorded characters such as Jane Birkin, Charlotte Gainsbourg, film director James Ivory, former first lady Juliana Awada and the kings of Spain.
Since 2021 he has been developing a photographic essay called "SER*ES" about the majestic cardons of northern Argentina, where he channels his greatest inspiration. His photograph LUNATICO, belonging to this series, was recently awarded first place in the "Plants & Fungi" category by the NATURE CONSERVATIVE ORGANIZATION (U.S.A) in its annual international photography competition, 2023.
In 2023, he was selected by the American brand BR HOME (Banana Republic) to sell an exclusive selection of his work throughout its network of stores and websites.
So far, in 2024, he exhibited in Romina Mendez Castelli's own space, in Abril Bellati's Lateral travelling gallery, and is currently exhibiting at the Barrackesh cultural space, in Barracas, Buenos Aires.

Statement

José Pereyra Lucena's work explores the dynamic interaction between humans and natural forms, capturing the intricate beauty of landscapes and the smallness of the individual in contrast to the vastness of the environment. He uses photography to explore scale, movement and texture, inviting reflection on our relationship with nature and the space we occupy. Each image seeks not only to document, but also to provoke a deep emotional connection with the viewer, highlighting natural aesthetics in black and white and color to emphasize subtle contrasts and details.
